Encouraged by Pope Eugenius IV, Ladislas III of Poland and Hungary led the <i>"Crusade of Varna"</i> against the Turks in the Balkans. On the Black Sea Coast, near Varna, the 20-year-old King was defeated and killed by Sultan Murad II, who then reconquered Serbia and Wallachia. The Hungarian commander Janos Hunyadi escaped and was killed in 1448 at Kossovo.
